Welcome to Even Mathematics is His, a web-site devoted to exploring a philosophy of mathematics acknowledging the worship that is due to God, the Father, God, the Son and God, the Holy Spirit.
God in the beginning formed matter in solid, massy, hard, impenetrable, movable particles, of such sizes and figures, and with such other properties, and in such proportion to space, as most conduced to the end for which he formed them. Isaac Newton |
The Creation MandateThere is no denying that Mathematics is very important for all people in all walks of life and in all generations. The Bible instructs me that God commanded a huge task for his creature, man (male and female). This mandate was to subdue, rule, cultivate and replenish the earth. Mathematics is part of the equipment that God granted man for the task. I acknowledge God's handiwork and design in both the visible and invisible realms.
I know that there are many professional mathematicians who do not share this teaching, and logic demands that there exists no neutral ground. This web-site is about mathematics, unapologetically giving God his due. In this endeavour, I have very able mathematicians as my mentors: Newton, Leibniz, Kepler, Descartes and Euler must all be numbered amongst them. The mandate to rule over the land and sea and all living creatures is evident in every culture, in every era of recorded history. It has been pursued in a multitude of ways with varying levels of success. There have been counting systems, mapping systems, calculating systems and problem-solving capacities found in archaeological records the world over. Despite all mankind being tainted by ignorance of God and disobedience to His precepts, the tasks of naming, building, creating and ruling have all been pursued wherever men have lived. Mathematics assists societies to cooperate in the planning and execution of projects of immense proportions. Cultures have developed procedures in unique ways, but there remains a distinct common endeavour to pursue tasks associated with the Creation Mandate. Evidence exists from the world over for using Mathematics to do such tasks as recording food supplies, organising resources, planning buildings and measuring the land. History also records the dramatic development of mathematics within the Christian culture. Universities were almost exclusively Christian traingin institutions until well into the 20th Century. A simple observation on this point; if one believes that the natural world is the handiwork of a law-giver, then Mathematics will be used to describes the laws of nature.Christianity is unique in this respect. |
